Wanting To Make Better Choices? Here Are the 4 Outside Factors You Need To Master
#2: Your past experiences.
Choosing is something we all do every day. Whether you realize it or not, you make choices all day long. Of course, some of your choices will have no consequences, while others, rarer, will have much more important consequences on your life.
When you have to choose the shirt you are going to wear to work today, your decision will certainly have little impact on the rest of your life. At most, choosing your lucky shirt will boost your confidence if you have an important presentation to make to your boss.
However, your life will not be impacted in the same way as when you had to choose which college you would attend. That choice had a decisive impact on the rest of your life.
You may have thought that you could have made these types of crucial decisions on your own in good conscience. Well, think again! Every decision we make, no matter what it is, is impacted by 4 important external factors that you will have to learn to master.
By recognizing which external factors influence your choices, you will be able to take your decisions to the next level.
Your family history
Your family history defines who you have become. Other factors came into play, but everything your parents, brothers, and sisters taught you throughout your youth reinforced different biases in your mind. And these biases will strongly impact your choices.
So, when making a choice, you should try to be aware of what is related to your family history. This will help you to take a step back. Then you can decide if the choice you were going to make is the one you want to make.
Or if it's just the result of everything you've experienced so far. You might want to go in an opposite direction after all, by letting go of the weight of your past. This is your full right, but to benefit from it, you will have to become aware of it.
Your past experiences
Your past experiences are embedded deep in your mind. Positive or negative, they are there and directly impact your choices in the present. You must absolutely make sure that you do not let your past dictate your choices in the present, otherwise, you could make the same mistakes over and over again.
It is often said that applying the same recipes does not produce different results. And this is true!
Let's say you have been cheated on in the past by your partner. This unfortunate experience should not prevent you from fully living your future experiences by trusting your new partner. This new partner deserves the best from you.
You must not let the past cloud your mind and make you make choices that you would not normally make.
Group influence
Your friends and the groups you belong to will influence your choices. This starts at a young age. You've probably all seen young people who start smoking just to fit in with the other members of the group and not feel left out.
Well, this mechanism will be repeated at all times in your life. And in all areas.
Being able to step back from the influence of a group and then express your individuality takes a lot of courage. Many people are unable to do this or are not even aware of it. If you want to make better choices in your life, I encourage you to be able to step out of the group influence.
Group trust
This fourth factor is an extension of the previous one. When you are in a group, you will tend to trust the group members more than the rest of the world. The problem is that your group members don't know everything. Neither are you or I.
In all situations, you must learn to think critically. Your decisions must be made with as much input as possible. That's how you get the best output.
Don't let the power of friends you believe in lead you directly in a direction you haven't chosen to go. Consider what your trusted friends are telling you. Incorporate their advice into your decision-making process, but be sure to decide for yourself in the end.
Final Thoughts
Making high-impact decisions is never easy. Contrary to what many people believe, it is not their free will that expresses itself most of the time, but rather the product of the 4 external factors that I just detailed. To make better decisions, based on what you want to do, you will have to become aware of how these 4 factors influence you.
Once you have taken this initial step, you will be on your way to better mastering them. At the end of this work on yourself, you will be able to decide for yourself.
