Wanting To Be More Confident and Resilient in Life? Get Rid of These 2 Big Traps
You will become your biggest ally.
No matter what your goals are, you may have already noticed that it is extremely hard to stay motivated over time to achieve them. Many times, you will have to make choices. Between the difficult, but necessary, path to take and the easy path, the temptation will often be to take the easy way.
When things get hard and complicated, it is always easier to take the easy way out by staying in your comfort zone.
There are a lot of distractions waiting for you in that comfort zone where you feel so safe. These distractions can be of different kinds, but in the end, they will only take you away from what you need to do to reach the growth zone.
While acting against these distractions may be quite easy when you are motivated to achieve your goals, you will eventually face a much tougher and unexpected opponent. This opponent is the one you see every morning in the mirror.
You can indeed be your own worst enemy if you fall into the two traps that prevent you from being truly confident and resilient in life. To get into gear, you need to identify these two adversaries and then get rid of them. That's what I propose you do in this article.
Trap #1: You are your own worst judge
Highly motivated people tend to be their own worst judge. Instead of seeing the glass as half full, they constantly see the glass as half empty. This attitude will prevent you from moving in the right direction since you will never be able to properly evaluate the progress you have made.
By doing this, you become your own worst enemy when you should be your greatest ally. You waste a lot of time focusing all your thoughts on what's wrong, which causes you to constantly dwell on the past.
The first thing to do to solve this problem and get out of this trap is to see when you are doing this to yourself.
Once you have seen the situations in which you tend to self-criticize too violently, you can move on to the next step. This one is to focus on the positive and then build on it to do better next time.
You've been preparing for weeks to get into Google. You went through the entire recruitment process. Unfortunately, you failed the final recruitment tests. Instead of beating yourself up about it by thinking it was a failure, look at the positive.
You learned a lot during this process. Things that you can use to become better in the future for your next recruitment tests.
The key here is to understand that failure or success are only outcomes in the larger process of life. In any case, you should keep moving forward by building on these outcomes. The best thing you can do is to be positive and really build on these outcomes and then do better the next time.
By doing so, you will boost your confidence, because you will see failure for what it is: a great opportunity to progress.
Trap #2: You think your past mistakes will prevent you from building the future you dream of
Failures are part of the process leading to success. After reading and re-reading this, you have already integrated this fundamental truth. Nevertheless, when you are faced with a major failure, which is moreover due to mistakes on your part, it is difficult to stay in this mindset of failure to be used positively.
You will probably start to develop some fears that your past mistakes will harm your chances of success in the future.
To get out of this trap, you must understand that failures and successes are only outcomes. Outcomes that do not predict future failure or success. You can have failed ten times before and succeeded at something great on the eleventh attempt if you kept trying your best by adapting after each failure.
It would be the opposite. The more failures in your past that you can learn from and adapt to, the greater your chances of succeeding in your most ambitious goals.
So you simply must find the courage to keep moving forward by making this remarkable quote from Winston Churchill your own:
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
Final Thoughts
You cannot achieve great things if you are not convinced that you can do it. Indeed, self-confidence is the starting point of any great success. To this, you must add resilience so that you never give up no matter what the outcome of what you undertake.
By getting rid of the two traps I have described in this article, you will be able to develop over time enough confidence and resilience to succeed. The rest is just a matter of patience.
