There Are No Bad Writers, Only Writers Under Construction Waiting To Get Their Share of Light
The example of Stephen King is there to prove it.
I have been writing every day for many years now. I can't even tell when I started writing daily. Writing has always been a passion for me, and I think I've been writing for as long as I can remember.
What has changed over time is the topics I write about.
Like any writer, I share my opinions and ideas about things I experience and topics that challenge me. The things that resonate with me today as I enter my late thirties are not the same things that resonated with me when I was twenty.
Too many beginning writers give up quickly by giving too much importance to statistics
Perhaps even more than writing, I love to read. I read a lot of content every day. I read articles on the Internet or in newspapers, and I read a lot of books too.
It is through reading or observing the world around me that I frequently see new ideas for articles come up that I had not even considered before. The writer's job is then to make the most of those ideas as they arise, to quote Stephen King.
If you don't read a lot, you'll have a hard time getting enough inspiration to write every day.
Without the regularity that allows each writer to build up over time as he or she progresses day by day, then you will probably feel like a bad writer. Many beginning writers give up quickly because of this.
The other day I was reading a story about a writer who despaired of getting very few views on his stories. With just 10 to 15 views per story, this writer was wondering if he had the right to call himself a writer. Or maybe just a failed writer.
It reminded me of a story about Stephen King that I had read a few years ago.
Stephen King's story is a reminder that statistics say nothing about the quality of your writing
At the beginning of Stephen King's career, publishers considered that a writer should not publish more than one book per year. They were afraid that beyond that, the public would get bored. Of course, today, this seems outdated. But at the time, Stephen King had to live under this constraint.
After his first successes, Stephen King did not intend to stop there. You all know that Stephen King is a writer with a vivid imagination. In order not to thwart his talent, Stephen King decided to create a secret identity under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman.
Thus, Stephen King published a few books under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman. The quality of the books was the same as those with which Stephen King had been successful over the same period.
However, Richard Bachman's books were hardly successful at all. This made Stephen King aware of one essential fact: your initial fame makes all the difference when your writing is read. Whether you like it or not, that's the reality.
The proof was in the pudding a few years later. Once the truth came out, Richard Bachman's published books became wildly successful. All of Stephen King's fans flocked to see them. Just knowing that they were written by Stephen King made all the difference in the minds of the readers.
Among these books, we find "Running Man" which was then a big success in the cinema with a certain Arnold Schwarzenegger in the main role.
This anecdote about Stephen King is very telling and should make you understand that the number of views of your writing does not define the quality of your writing. You are not a bad writer just because you have no views. Many other parameters come into play as you can see with the Stephen King story.
The timing makes all the difference.
Continue to become a better writer by writing day by day until you get your share of light
Until you reach the light that is sufficient for your writing to be truly considered, you must not lose heart. You should think of yourself as a writer in the making. Don't get discouraged. Appreciate the time that you have to improve day by day.
Numbers are just numbers. They will eventually go up if you are consistent and patient enough.
And the day you get your share of light, the readers you were painting to follow in the past will suddenly come to happily rediscover your old writing. Finally, keep in mind that the simple fact of writing day after day without losing your enthusiasm already makes you a real writer.
Not everyone can do this for years on end. If you want to become a writer, that's all the trouble you'll have to go through.
