Self-Confidence Is a Muscle. Here Are 3 Ways To Develop It
Self-confidence is developed over time through daily efforts.
Self-confidence. Self-confidence is a vast subject. An important subject, since without self-confidence, it is impossible to achieve great things in this world.
We live in an ultra-competitive world. If you don't have self-confidence, you will have one more opponent to face to succeed: yourself. You will start with a handicap that will be difficult to erase.
So it's in your best interest to have confidence in yourself.
Unfortunately, things are not that simple. You are not going to wake up one morning and suddenly feel confident. There is no magic bullet. In fact, you have to compare self-confidence to a muscle. Just as you're not going to wake up one morning with ultra-developed biceps or pectoral muscles of steel, you're not going to wake up with extraordinary self-confidence.
Like everything else that is valuable, it takes time.
Once you understand that your confidence is like a muscle, you'll need to be willing to work day in and day out to develop it. To do this, I recommend 3 ways to take action to learn how to be truly confident.
Dare to reach out to others to discuss
When one lacks self-confidence, it is easier to withdraw into oneself. This avoids putting yourself in danger by confronting others. If you take the easy way out with this bad habit, certainly, you will never be able to build your self-confidence.
You need to take the opposite approach. Dare to reach out to others to talk. Share your experiences and listen to those of others.
Little by little, you will gain confidence in yourself and your networking abilities. Above all, you will see that others are not worse or better than you. They are imperfect human beings just like you and me. They have simply decided to take advantage of their imperfection which makes them unique.
They go through life accepting the things they cannot control. They focus on the rest, and that makes all the difference.
Learn to control your emotions to use them
An emotion is a physiological and physical reaction to a situation. It is an internal manifestation at the beginning that eventually translates into an external reaction. Faced with an unknown situation or an unexpected event, your emotions will quickly take over.
It is in these moments that you can act to reinforce your self-confidence. I would even say that you should seek out these uncomfortable situations as often as possible.
Learn to feel comfortable in these moments by controlling your emotions. It will be hard to do this well at first, but you will get better and better at it over time.
Seeing that you are no longer subjected to the most unexpected events will boost your confidence. If you can withstand that, then you can handle anything in life.
Get out of your comfort zone as often as possible
You've probably heard of the comfort zone. This is the famous zone where you are in control of your environment. It's where you feel comfortable because there's nothing new or unfamiliar.
If you stay in your comfort zone too often, you will end up never being able to leave it. In fact, your self-confidence will have diminished so much, that you will not feel capable of going beyond what you have mastered.
Let me give you a simple example. I am afraid of a vacuum. Yet I decided to go paragliding recently. My mother said to me:
"Why are you putting yourself in danger like this?"
My answer was pretty simple:
"If I don't do it, I will never be able to grow and become better over time."
I put myself at these risks that allow me to step out of my comfort zone. After my paragliding flight was over, I felt a great sense of pride in having gone beyond my fear. My self-confidence was boosted.
You get the idea. The more you confront your limits and overcome them, the more confident you will be. It's a virtuous circle that you must enter.
Final Thoughts
Self-confidence is not innate, as some people think. Of course, we have all met people who seem to be naturally overconfident.
However, if these people are so confident, it is mainly because they feel this instinctive need to surpass themselves day after day from a very young age. This has allowed them to build up their confidence in an incredible way over time.
The good news is that you, too, can learn to have great confidence. To do this, you need to understand that this is a muscle that you will need to work on daily. If you follow the 3 tips I just shared with you for several months, you will already notice a big difference in your life.
