Barely three weeks after his Liberation Day, Donald Trump will finally have been the first to give in in the tariff war he initiated against China. On April 23, 2025, Donald Trump finally admitted to the world's media that the surtaxes imposed on Beijing were very high, and that they were going to come down substantially anyway. It has to be said that Donald Trump had already suffered several setbacks during the week of April 7, 2025, with falling markets already sanctioning the economic nonsense of his all-out tariff war, and a China that showed its muscles by retaliating curtly with retaliatory measures. This went against the grain of the rest of the world, which had accepted Trump's measures with a straight face, as if everyone imagined that better days were ahead. But China now can do much more than resist America, and Xi Jinping has been stung in his national pride. Trump's umpteenth U-turn on April 9, 2025, had already taken the form of a double backflip.

Wanting to show his magnanimity to those who had stood firm in the face of the Trump tornado, Trump had offered a ninety-day respite, allowing them to negotiate, but not without patronizing them with a rare vulgarity. One major exception emerged, however: Chinese products would be subject to a stratospheric 145% tax, which was dropped in a new pirouette on April 12 for electronics. The reason for this colossal and prohibitive tariff? Beijing had dared to retaliate against the previous tariff by applying the same 84% rate to American exports.

Donald Trump can't stand Xi Jinping and the CCP resisting his show of force, but as I'll explain below, while Trump may be able to make more noise and impress in front of the media, Xi Jinping and the CCP have a major advantage over America: that of time.
