Most People Don’t Care About You – And That’s Great! Here’s Why.
Free yourself from this misconception to fully become who you want to be.
The majority of people I meet are overly concerned with what others think of them. We are social creatures, and it can make sense to have an interest in how others view us. This gives you feedback that allows you to improve yourself in the right way.
The problem is that many people don't positively use this, and then get stuck in their actions.
Giving too much importance to the looks of others will hurt you in an incredible number of situations:
When asking someone out on a date.
You won't dare ask a co-worker for help for fear that he or she will consider you incompetent.
You won't apply for your dream job for fear of rejection.
You won't speak up to express your ideas in a meeting for fear that others will consider your ideas unimportant.
You won't talk to an interesting stranger at a party for fear that they won't like you.
I'll stop here, but if you're like most people, you've probably experienced one of the situations I've just listed.
The problem is always the same: you need positive feedback from others. You don't live for anything else. When that positive feedback isn't there, you start to doubt, and you end up depriving yourself of a whole bunch of experiences you'd like to do simply because you're afraid of not being judged positively.
This is where you need to step back and see the bigger picture. In reality, the vast majority of people don't care about you. Do you find that violent or hard to hear? Too bad, because it's the truth.
You can wear whatever clothes you want, most people at your work won't even notice. Other people think the same as you and also focus on what others think of them generally. De facto, they don't have time to do what you most fear they might do: judge you.
It's hard to convince yourself of this, but once you do, you'll say to yourself, “No one cares about me, that's wonderful, I'm free to do what I want”.
Because that's the way you have to look at it. The fact that most people don't care about you should allow you to do what you want in life. Do you want to try new things? Be honest about it. Others may notice a difference, but it will be short-lived. Even if others have negative judgments about you, it will never last.
Why? I've told you this before. Everyone is mostly concerned with their image in society. It is a paradoxical situation when you think about it. Most people are so afraid of the judgment of others that no one notices that this gives them a lot of freedom of action.
It all starts with the realization that you are not the center of attention wherever you are. Whatever mistakes or failures you make, others may notice, but it will never last very long. So you can dare to be yourself. It's the only thing you can do to express yourself fully and live the life you want to live.
Once you get into this virtuous circle, you can never go back. You will be yourself for the better.
Love this Sylvain, is so true but most of us forget that fact of life. I also like the old expression “what you think of me is none of my business “ 😀
