More Active Than Ever, Donald Trump Acts in the Shadows To Prepare His Great Revenge
Donald Trump thinks more than ever about 2024.
Donald Trump left the White House on January 20, 2021, in an unglamorous manner. He did not even attend the inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden, as tradition dictates. Always refusing to concede defeat, Donald Trump appeared in the last weeks of his term as President of the United States as a sore loser.
When I talk about a sore loser for Donald Trump, that's an understatement. He is probably the worst loser in the history of American politics. That's a personal opinion and history will be the sole judge of that.
Deprived of his Twitter account following the events of January 6, 2021, Donald Trump can no longer post dozens of tweets every day as he loved to do so much. Donald Trump no longer has direct access to his 88 million fans on the Twitter network. As a result, Donald Trump seems to lack the almighty power that allowed him to instrumentalize millions of fans.
Many seem to think that Donald Trump is already a thing of the past.
Donald Trump is already preparing for his return
Unfortunately, Donald Trump is still here. The fact that we see him less in social networks and media doesn't prevent Donald Trump from being more active than ever. Acting in the shadows, Donald Trump continues to have a major impact on the GOP.
For those who still had doubts, Donald Trump intends to come back. And not only at the time of the impeachment proceedings that the U.S. Senate will have to consider on February 9. If Donald Trump is currently in Florida in his luxurious residence of Mar-a-Lago, it is only transitory in his eyes. His big goal is still a return to the White House in 2024.
Donald Trump has already opened an office in Florida. This office will be in charge of managing his missions as former president of the United States, but also of seeking to advance the political agenda of his administration. To continue to carry weight within the GOP, Donald Trump still leaves the threat of creating a new political party hanging over his head.
Given its popularity in the United States, such an initiative could weaken the GOP permanently. No one in the Republican party wants that.
Donald Trump has just opened an office in Florida keeping the pressure on the GOP
The announcement of the creation of his Florida office was made on Monday, January 25, the same day that the House of Representatives formally sent the impeachment against Donald Trump to the Senate. The 45th president of the United States will be tried for "inciting insurrection" in a second impeachment case against him.
Nevertheless, Donald Trump is not too worried about this issue. If it will be tried, there is very little risk that Donald Trump will be convicted.
His continuing influence within the GOP is evident. One of his congressional followers, newly elected Marjorie Taylor Greene, was careful to issue a clear warning on Twitter to her GOP colleagues the day Trump left the White House:
“Here’s the warning the GOP needs to hear. The vast majority of Republican voters, volunteers, and donors are no longer loyal to the GOP, Republican Party, and candidates just because they have an R by their name. Their loyalty now lies with Donald J Trump.”
The threat of the creation of a political party remains on Donald Trump's side
Even cut off from direct access to his supporters since his ban from Twitter, Donald Trump continues to have a major influence on the GOP. By continuing to circulate rumors of the creation of a new political party that could be called the "Patriot Party", Donald Trump is threatening Conservative Senators. They could lose a large part of the electorate to Trump.
To prevent Donald Trump from carrying out this threat, GOP Senators know what they have to do: stay loyal to him no matter what. Donald Trump could very well sanction those who are not loyal by then encouraging opponents to run against them in their next primaries.
Even though the Democrats now control the Senate, they still need 17 Republican votes to convict Trump. That number will be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain, as Joe Biden himself admitted on CNN.
The violence of January 6, 2021, on Capitol Hill has left its mark on the minds of the entire American political class. Even the Republicans most loyal to Donald Trump admit behind the scenes that they were shocked by this attack on the citadel of the American Democracy. Yet very few support the trial. On January 26th, 45 of the 50 GOP Senators even defended an initiative to try to block the proceedings, arguing that it is unconstitutional to try a former president in the Senate.
Among them was powerful Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who did not rule out convicting Donald Trump in the end.
The impeachment trial is stillborn according to Rand Paul
Rand Paul, Republican Senator from Kentucky, already explains that the trial against Donald Trump is "stillborn". While some have suggested that the vote does not prejudge their final decision at the end of the trial, it does show the enormous influence Trump still has on the GOP.
An influence that Donald Trump intends to maintain in the coming months to be in a position to take his revenge in 2024.
In the meantime, the break between Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell is consummated. A former ally of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell had done everything in the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump to defend his acquittal. This time, Mitch McConnell will let his troops vote "in good conscience". Donald Trump had already not forgiven Mitch McConnell for publicly acknowledging Joe Biden's victory in mid-December 2020.
Mitch McConnell's recent statements will only reinforce Donald Trump's animosity towards him.
Donald Trump's approval is always preponderant within the GOP
Senator Mitt Romney, a rare openly critical Republican voice against Donald Trump in Congress, is a strong advocate for the trial. He was one of the few Republicans who directly congratulated Joe Biden on his election when the result was announced a few days after the November 3, 2020 election. A target of Donald Trump's supporters, who see this as a betrayal of their hero, Romney laughed back when an activist predicted that he would face opposition in the next senate primary in his Utah stronghold.
If Mitt Romney has the courage to choose democracy over political strategy, it is something that will remain rare in the Republican ranks.
Donald Trump demonstrated once again last weekend that he can make a difference in the election by tipping the scales so that a staunch supporter, Kelli Ward, remains at the head of the Republican Party in Arizona. Donald Trump's endorsement remains more valuable than ever to the GOP.
Trump's former spokesperson, Sarah Sanders, who is running for governor of Arkansas in 2022, understands this. She proudly posts on Twitter what is now a profession of faith:
Final Thoughts
By leaving the White House on January 20, 2021, Donald Trump had sent a message of warning to his opponents and hope to his supporters:
“We will be back in some form.”
Those who had already buried Donald Trump are already beginning to realize that the former president of the United States remains more than ever in the shadows. Eager for revenge, he intends to continue to weigh in on the GOP to achieve his ultimate goal: revenge in the 2024 presidential election.
