“Fake It Till You Make It” Is Bad Advice – Give You the Time and the Chance To Really Make It.
There is nothing worse for your growth than pretending to be the person you are not.
You have succeeded in clearly defining your goals in life. Congratulations!
You have already taken an essential first step. The hardest thing is always to start, as the saying goes. You'll like what comes next because the saying also goes that you'll never regret making that initial effort.
Defining your goals in life and your plan to achieve them is a prerequisite.
However, then you realize that the road ahead is long. You know that the journey must be enjoyed more than the destination, but in day-to-day life, this is difficult to implement.
To accelerate your growth, some will advise you to act as if you are already successful.
As some of your progress is slow, in your eyes since everyone is free to move at their own pace, you decide to rely on another approach. Another proverb often tells you: “Fake It Till You Make It”.
So you will resort to this subterfuge.
Let's say you dream of being successful online. Instead of taking the time to succeed, you will fake it by paying to get more followers on various social networks. You'll lie about your successes in your YouTube videos. And so on.
You can see the idea behind this way of acting since this is how most online influencers work.
You will give the image of someone who succeeds brilliantly and quickly. The image of yourself that others will send back to you will make you think more highly of yourself. This will reinforce your value, but only temporarily.
Pretending is the worst idea ever
You will have spent a lot of time pretending, but in reality, you will soon realize that you will not be able to achieve the goals you claim to have already reached. You simply want to move too fast. Success always takes time to build. There are no shortcuts.
With your “Fake It Till You Make It” approach, you will want to force things, and you will get stuck.
You can no longer ask others for help, for the simple reason that it would require you to unmask yourself. How can you ask others for help when you are already supposed to be very successful?
Without outside help, you will not progress. You will even regress. You will feel a terrible sense of doubt. You will be afraid that others will find out the truth about you. The feeling of the impostor will eat away at you day after day.
Yet you will have to continue to play a double game by pretending that you are this great success that everyone else can relate to. But you will have no one to identify with. You will have lost yourself along the way.
The negative pressure you will have created will only push you further into a feeling of uncertainty that will eventually become total. Without any certainty, you will have no chance of achieving the goals you originally set for yourself.
This shortcut you tried to take will become a dead end.
This could take you away from your goals for good
The most damaging thing here is that you could very well have succeeded in achieving your goals. Not as quickly as you would have initially hoped, but you would have had the chance to prove yourself along the road to success.
You would have faced failure of course, but you would have given yourself the chance to overcome those challenges by proving the strength of your character. You would have been able to appreciate what you were accomplishing and build your self-confidence daily.
If you had difficulties, you could have asked for help easily, because everything you were experiencing would be true. By being yourself, no more fear of disappointing others. No more impostor syndrome.
Your growth would take longer, but it would have the advantage of being true, which would give you much more pleasure in the end.
The best thing to do is to give yourself the time and opportunity to succeed for good
To succeed, you will have to choose between something easy and false, or something difficult but true. I would encourage you to give yourself the time and the chance to do it. Never fall into the impostor trap. It will only take you further away from your dreams.
Appreciate that things are difficult, and understand that this is what makes them even more valuable. The harder a mountain is to climb, the prouder you will be of yourself along the way. I'm not even talking about the happiness you'll feel at the top.
Indeed, you will have done it. And you will never forget it.
Because you've done it once, you'll be able to do it again when you have new peaks to climb. You will then be in the growth zone where everything becomes possible for your future. That's all the bad news I wish you. To do this, you will need perseverance, resilience, and patience.
