A Recession Is Coming? This Is the Time of Opportunity for Bold Entrepreneurs.
WhatsApp, Uber, and Square were born during the Great Recession.
The recession is expected to arrive in America in late 2022 or early 2023. The world will not be spared either. Pessimism is everywhere. In the financial markets. In the headlines of the media. Consumers are obviously in low spirits as the bad news piles up.
Yet, despite the current gloom, there is reason to remain optimistic.
Historically, recessionary times have been as much a challenge as an opportunity. Challenges, because the recession will purge the market of companies that are not strong enough. Challenges, because workers will face increasingly difficult living conditions.
But also opportunities, because even if a recession hits your country, there are still problems to solve. Markets are still waiting to be created. New products are waiting to be created to reach customers who are still looking for solutions to make their lives easier.
The fact that the macroeconomic context is extremely difficult does not change this need for the modernity of human beings. It is a fundamental need that we have inscribed deep in our DNA.
Do you doubt what I have just told you?
Without going back very far, look at the most successful companies today that were created during the previous recession between 2007 and 2009.
The previous Great Recession saw the birth of many successful companies, from WhatsApp to Uber
You have WhatsApp which met the need for people to communicate easily and quickly even without the same cellular network capabilities as a large country like America. Founded in 2009, WhatsApp was later acquired for $19B by Facebook in 2014. WhatsApp has over 2 billion users worldwide today.
In 2009, then in Paris, businessmen Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp could not find a cab ride on a cold night. This was a major problem for which they saw the possibility of responding with a bold solution.
They created Uber, which would become a global ride-sharing giant. Uber also offers a food delivery service, a bike, and scooter-sharing service, and a temporary worker recruitment service. As you can see, there are no limits to the imagination of an entrepreneur whose every problem he or she faces is a potential opportunity to be seized.
Square, which has since been renamed to Block, was founded by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey in 2009. The payment platform is now used by over 30 million companies to conduct financial transactions. As a firm believer in the future of Bitcoin, Jack Dorsey left Twitter behind to focus fully on Block. The future belongs to bold entrepreneurs who sense the trends of tomorrow's world and want to respond before others do.
I could have added to this list Venmo, Groupon, Slack, or Pinterest, but I think you get the essential idea I'm trying to convey.
Opportunities exist for those who continue to stay positive
That idea is that you should never let the gloom and doom get you down no matter what the macro conditions are. Don't get distracted and keep in mind that opportunities are everywhere at all times. Consumers and potential users will always need new products that meet their needs, and these needs will continue to exist despite the economic cycles we go through.
A recession does not mean that consumer problems no longer exist. It just means that you will probably have more difficulty financing your projects and ideas. However, good ideas always reach users when they are launched in the right way at the right time.
Be cautious, but stay optimistic and keep using your energy positively to create. That's how you'll be one of the big winners in the next recession, which is sure to bring a lot of opportunities.
The big question is whether you will be able to seize them. It's up to you!
