A 5-Step Plan To Get Rid of a Negative Mindset
Having a positive mindset is the key to achieving great things.
You cannot succeed in life if you are not convinced that you are capable of achieving what you want. This seems to be an obvious statement, but I want to make it clear at the outset, because I meet many people who complain about not being able to achieve their goals, without ever asking themselves if their state of mind was not the main reason for their repeated failures.
So I refer you to this quote from William Arthur Ward:
“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.”
The first step in your success will therefore be to believe in yourself more than anything else. You must become your own best ally. This means getting rid of your negative mindset.
To do this, I suggest that you follow a simple, but effective 5-step plan.
1. Surround yourself with positive people
I suppose you have already read or heard at least once in your life the quote from the American entrepreneur Jim Rohn who says that "you are the average of the five people we spend the most time with".
There is nothing scientific about this statement by Jim Rohn. Rather, it is an empirical law based on his observation that has been confirmed over the years.
If you surround yourself with negative people who constantly choose to see the glass as half empty, then you will become like them. This is a certainty. You may be the most optimistic person in the world, but you will eventually give in to the temptation of negativity.
So the best way to get rid of your negative mindset is to surround yourself with positive people. People who, like you, choose to see the glass as half full in all circumstances.
You will then enter a virtuous circle that will only strengthen your positive state of mind.
2. Don’t accept negativity from other people
Even if you have surrounded yourself with as many positive people as possible, you will always come across negative people. Whether they do it consciously or not, these people will always try to spoil your morale.
You tell them what your ambitions are, and they will always find a way to see the difficulties and try to dissuade you rather than encourage you to excel.
These people are either totally negative or jealous of what you are trying to achieve. Many would rather just criticize at every turn than take action like you are doing.
There is no magic formula for dealing with these negative people. You will have to toughen up and refuse to accept their negativity. Step back and learn not to listen to them. Easier said than done, but that's the challenge ahead.
3. Limit negative thoughts to 30 minutes per day
Just as you can't cut yourself off from negative people completely, you can't stop yourself from having negative thoughts from time to time. The good news that should reassure you here is that even the most positive-minded people in the world have negative thoughts from time to time.
The difference is that they don't let these negative thoughts take over their minds. By doing this, they avoid falling into a negative mindset that is destructive.
So the best thing to do is to make time for your negative thoughts. Limit yourself to 30 minutes of negative thoughts a day so that they don't take over your positive mindset.
4. Never sit around doing nothing
When things go wrong, it is easy to fall into a negative mindset. Why is this? Simply because lack of motivation means that you risk doing nothing. But by doing nothing, you increase the risk of thinking about negative things.
You will be in a negative vicious circle that will harm your general mindset.
So you should never sit around doing nothing. Always be busy so that your mind does not give too much space to the negative. Always have an occupation that gives meaning to what you are doing or pleases you.
This will keep the negative mindset away from you.
5. Make it a habit to think of at least 3 positive things about your day each day
In every situation, you will have to choose life. That choice will either be to see the bad side of things or to see the good side of things. You have to choose the latter.
To get used to making this choice naturally, there is nothing better than to force yourself to think of at least 3 positive things in your day.
There are at least three. Don't tell me otherwise, I won't believe you. There must be three, and many more, if you think about it. So make that effort that will make a real difference in your life.
The best part is that it will become a habit and you will always see the positive side without even thinking about it afterward. It takes time, but it is well worth it.
Final Thoughts
Your mindset is key to your chances of succeeding in achieving your most ambitious goals in life. If you have a negative mindset, you will be doomed to fail, and worse, to not get up and try again and again.
At some point, you must choose to rid yourself of this negative mindset and join the camp of those who see the glass as half full and build their greatest successes on it. By following the 5-step plan I've just detailed, you'll get there.
Nothing will be easy though, and you will need to continue to make this choice of positivity daily to maximize your chances of success.
